Nanocellulose hydrogels formed via crystalline transformation from cellulose I to II and subsequent freeze cross-linking reaction

We describe non-toxic, tough nanocellulose (NC) hydrogels formed from chemically unmodified NC by cellulose crystalline transformation and subsequent freeze cross-linking reaction. Using low-concentration NaOH and freezing together induced the crystalline transformation of NC from cellulose I to II via freeze concentration. After the crystalline transformation, cross-linking between the NC and CA in the freeze concentration layer (FCL) provided a strong NC network structure, forming NC hydrogels with high mechanical strength. The freeze-cross-linked NC hydrogel easily retained powder adsorbents in its inner space by mixing the NC-NaOH sol and the powder, and the hydrogel showed high removal efficiency for heavy metals. The results highlight the versatility of chemically unmodified celluloses in developing functional materials, suggest possible practical applications.

Random media criticality analysis methods in Monte Carlo solver Solomon

A Monte Carlo Solver Solomon has been under development as an object-oriented code written in the C++14 standards. It consists of regular capabilities of criticality safety analysis and a special capability of random media criticality. In the latter capability, Solomon is equipped with a class for the random media modeled by the incomplete randomized Weierstrass function (IRWF). By this modeling, the uncertainty of random media criticality can be evaluated by executing criticality calculations over many IRWF-replicas. However, it is impossible to know beforehand how many IRWF-replicas should be computed. To deal with this issue, a bounded amplification (BA) technique has been newly equipped in Solomon. Applying BA to IRWF, it is possible to reduce the number of IRWF-replicas by more than 95% in terms of the upper limit estimation of neutron effective multiplication factor. Solomon is also equipped with a voxel-overlay (VO). This functionality is shown to be valuable for evaluating the resonance self-shielding effect.

Novel hydrogel properties by microstructural control of carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibers using freezing

By using the freezing phenomenon, we discovered that a hydrogel with high compressive strength can be formed using only harmless materials, mainly carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibers. The key is the phase separation of ice crystals and solutes that occurs when aqueous solutions freeze. This paper describes the formation mechanism of the freeze crosslinked hydrogel and its properties.

The reaction mechanism of carboxymethyl cellulose nanofiber (CMCF) hydrogel formed by freeze-crosslinking was investigated. We succeeded in observing the hierarchical structural changes during the freeze-crosslinking reaction. Freeze-crosslinked CMCF hydrogels exhibited a characteristic hierarchical alignment structure from the angstrom to micrometer scale that differed from normal cross-linked CMCF hydrogels produced by a conventional method without freezing. It was shown that the characteristic hierarchical structure contributes the excellent mechanical properties of freeze-crosslinked CMCF hydrogels.

The $$^{129}$$I analysis using ICP-MS is challenging caused by xenon-129 ($$^{129}$$Xe) and $$^{127}$$IH$$_{2}$$ generated from excess stable isotope $$^{127}$$I. In this study, mass discrimination between iodine-129 ($$^{129}$$I) and interfering substances was achieved by inductively coupled plasma-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) with a dynamic reaction cell introduced a mixture gas of O$$_{2}$$ and CO$$_{2}$$. As a result, the ratio of (background noise intensity at m/z 129)/$$^{127}$$I was 3.8 $$times$$ 10$$^{-10}$$ and 10 mBq/L of $$^{129}$$I was analyzed without chemical separation in the presence of 100 mg/L stable $$^{127}$$I. Spiked tests with actual rainwater were performed, and obtained values were agreed with the spiked amounts.

New methodology for a simultaneous isotope speciation of various Pu isotopes without complicated isobaric interferences is developed by using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In analyzing ICP tandem MS (ICP-MS/MS), CO$$_{2}$$ gas reactions in a dynamic reaction cell (DRC) almost eliminated the background noise intensity produced by isobaric interference from isotopes originating from actinides such as Am, Cm, and U at the locations (m/z) of significant Pu isotopes ($$^{239}$$Pu, $$^{240}$$Pu, $$^{241}$$Pu, $$^{242}$$Pu, $$^{244}$$Pu).

We have developed a hybrid piston cylinder cell for quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments up to about 1 GPa. It consists of a fretted cylinder made of the high tensile steel (SNCM439) liner and the Al alloy (NA700) jacket. Performance tests revealed that the cell can withstand a pressure of 0.8 GPa without irreversible damage and has 4.4 times larger neutron transmission at 3.14 meV (5.10${AA}$ in wavelength) than that of a conventional CuBe monobloc cylinder. Combined with the sample assembly devised for suppressing multiple scattering, high quality QENS spectra of water were obtained up to 0.8 GPa. This study illustrates the efficacy of the hybrid cylinders not only for increasing maximum available pressure but also manipulating the available pressure and the signal intensity, depending on the purpose of the experiments.

A Cellulose nanofiber hydrogel prepared via freeze cross-linking

Online solid-phase extraction-inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometry with oxygen dynamic reaction cell (online SPE-ICP-MS-DRC) was shown to be a thorough automatic analytical system, circumventing the need for human handling. At three stepwise separations (SPE-DRC-Q mass filters), we showed that interference materials allowed the coexistence of abundance ratios of 1.5$$times$$10$$^{-13}$$ for $$^{99}$$Tc/Mo. Using this optimized system, a detection limit of $$^{99}$$Tc was 9.3 pg/L (5.9 mBq/L) for a 50 mL injection and sequential measurements were undertaken at a cycle of 24 min/sample.

Uncertainty of the body size on the counting efficiency of a newly developed thyroid monitor was estimated by Monte Carlo simulations using several voxel phantoms. Overlying tissue thickness was a major impact factor on the counting efficiency. As a result, uncertainty related to the body size of the monitored subject was found to be 25%.

A continuous counter-current experiment to separate minor actinides (MAs: Am and Cm) was performed with ${it N,N,N',N',N'',N''}$-hexaochyl nitrilotriacetamide (HONTA) as an extractant. Nitric acid of 0.08 M (mol/dm$$^{3}$$) containing MAs and rare earths (REs) recovered from high-level waste was used as the Feed, and the experiment was conducted for 14 h. The ratios of Am and Cm recovered into the MA fraction measured 94.9% and 78.9%, respectively. HONTA hardly extracted Y, La, and Eu in the Feed (99.9% for Y, 99.9% for La, and 96.7% for Eu), most of which were distributed to the RE fraction. A portion of Nd was extracted by HONTA, and consequently the ratio of Nd in the RE fraction was 83.5%. The concentrations of MAs and some REs in each stage were calculated using a simulation code, and the results are consistent with the experimental values. This code indicates that the ratios of MAs in the MA fraction and REs in the RE fraction could be $$geq$$99% by optimizing separation conditions.

A continuous counter-current experiment using TDdDGA was performed using mixer-settler extractors installed in a hot cell. Nitric acid containing minor actinides (MAs: Am and Cm), rare earths (REs: Y, La, Nd, and Eu), and other fission products (Sr, Cs, Zr, Mo, Ru, Rh, and Pd) was fed to the extractor. TDdDGA effectively extracted MAs and REs from the feed, while other fission products were barely extracted. The extracted MAs and REs were back-extracted by bringing them in contact with 0.02 mol/dm$$^{3}$$ nitric acid, and they were collected as the MA-RE fraction. The proportions of MA and RE in the MA-RE fraction were $$>$$ 98% and $$>$$ 86%, respectively. These results demonstrated the applicability of TDdDGA as an extractant for MAs and REs.

Construction of adult Japanese voxel phantoms with various body sizes and their applications to evaluation of organ doses due to external photon irradiation

Organ doses for dose assessment in radiation protection are derived from ICRP reference phantoms (Male:RCP-AM, Female:RCP-AF) with standard Caucasian physiques. In adult, Japanese are smaller than Caucasian. To study impact of differences in physiques between Caucasian and Japanese on organ doses, we previously constructed Japanese phantoms (Male:JM-103, Female:JF-103) with average adult Japanese physiques. In addition, adult Japanese physiques have also wide distribution. Thus, we newly modeled DJM (Male) and DJF (Female) with 8 physiques by changing the perimeters of JM-103 and JF-103. Organ doses due to external photon irradiation of DJM and DJF were calculated, and were compared with those of RCP-AM and RCP-AF. In ISO geometry at 0.3 MeV, it was found that doses of breast, colon, lung, stomach, gonad, urinary bladder, esophagus, liver and thyroid in DJM and DJF with physiques, which are applicable to most adult Japanese, agreed with those of RCP-AM and RCP-AF within 10%.

Spent fuel test equipment for research and development activities at NUCEF-BECKY

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) conducts extensive research and development (R&D) activities toward the development of aqueous separation processes for spent nuclear fuel at the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Safety Engineering Research Facility-Back-end Fuel Cycle Key Element Research Facility (NUCEF-BECKY). BECKY is equipped with three hot cells, several glove boxes, and fume hoods. One of the hot cells, called the process cell, contains bench scale spent fuel test equipment used for U, Pu, and other spent fuel material. In this study, we describe an equipment used for aqueous separation processes in the process cell.

I will review miniature ceramic anvil cell mCAC for magnetic measurements under high pressure. Recently, the SQUID magnetometer has been used by researchers. Several types of high pressure cell have been developed for the magnetometer. In this paper, I will introduce our miniature ceramic anvil cell mCAC in details. Precise measurements can be possible with the mCAC since the background magnetization is smaller than those of other types of the cell. Finally, experimental data on the rare earth compound YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ will be shown. We detect pressure-induced ferromagnetic state in the compound above 10 GPa.

Quantitative evaluation of CO$$_{2}$$ emission reduction of active carbon recycling energy system for ironmaking by modeling with Aspen Plus

Use of the Active Carbon Recycling Energy System in ironmaking (iACRES) has been proposed for reducing CO$$_{2}$$ emissions. To evaluate the performance of iACRES quantitatively, a process flow diagram of a blast furnace model with iACRES was developed using Aspen Plus, a chemical process simulator. CO$$_{2}$$ emission reduction and exergy analysis were performed by using mass and energy balance obtained from simulation results. The following CO$$_{2}$$ reduction methods were evaluated as iACRES: solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) with CO$$_{2}$$ capture and separation (CCS), SOEC without CCS, and a reverse water-gas shift reactor powered by a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. iACRES enabled CO$$_{2}$$ emission reduction by 3-11% by recycling CO and H$$_{2}$$, whereas effective exergy ratio decreased by 1-7%.
